Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 8.  But, no need to panic yet.  There is still time to order flowers to have delivered to Mom.  Through some research on one of my favorite website, www.Groupon.com, I was surprised to find out there are still plenty of deals available for last minute shoppers for Mother's Day.  I have compiled a list of Groupon Deals Delivered Flowers under 20.00 ( Flowers under $20 )  just in time for Mother's Day.  Included in the list are some of Groupons best delivered treats for under $20.

If you are unfamiliar with Groupon.com, it's a website that companies use to market their business by providing discounts from 50%-90% for customers to try their product or service.  The only catch is you pay for the product through Groupon and then Groupon provides you a voucher, much like a gift certificate to use at the store.  We actually have a lot of Groupon specials locally for Woodbridge, Virginia.  When you go Groupon and enter your zip code they will provide you with local deals. Sorry I got a little side tracked on my enthusiasm for Groupon. All of the "Flowers Under $20" I found came from Groupon. That is why I wanted to make sure you understood how it worked.

Mail A Potato Step By Step, How To Guide

Mail A Potato

Step By Step, How To Guide

Did you know you can mail a potato without a box or any packaging?  I recently learned you can literally ship a potato.  I went to my local post office who gave me a 15-minute class on all the rules and tips they have seen other people do to make it easy.  I created this "Mail A Potato" article to help you do it right the first time.

My Dad was in the Marine Corps.  I grew up moving and PCS'ing my entire childhood.  With my dad's constant deployments and Mediterrian cruises we were limited on on when we could visit family.  I learned at an early age the importance of staying in touch with friends and family.  Now that I am older, I still look for creative ways to stay in touch with family.  As a result of my father's duty stations, my sister has made her permanent home outside of Camp Lejeune, NC and I am here outside of where our dad retired in Quantico.  My most recent idea for staying in touch with my sister, Shelley, is to send her Virginia State Lottery Scratchers.  My theory is if she wins a lot of money she has no choice but to come visit me to cash them.  Unfortunately, she has not won big yet.

A couple of weeks ago, I was on Groupon and saw an ad for Anonymous Potato.  It was a service where you could mail a potato.  I was intrigued.  I immediately sent my brother a potato through their service.  It cost a total of $15 and took almost 2 weeks to get there.  I wanted to see if I could mail a potato myself and what it would cost and the shipping time compared to Anonymous Potato.  I went to my local Post Office and they educated me on how to mail a potato.

Step 1:  Clean Your Potato

  • Make sure you pick out a potato that is large enough
  • Nothing too lumpy
  • You must clean it so it doesn't have any dirt on it
  • Don't scrub too hard to bruise or tear the skin
  • Allow your potato to dry overnight

Step 2:  Get All Your Supplies Together

  • You will need to make mailing labels, writing the address takes too much room
  • Gather these supplies and take with you to the Post Office

    • Mailing Labels (To and From)
    • Scissors
    • Pencil (the eraser helps push down edges when gluing)
    • LOTS of paper towels (it gets messy)
    • Markers
    • Permanent Marker
    • Super Glue
  • Take all your supplies to the Post Office and set-up a station, You will be there a while!

Step 3: Super Glue Labels

  • As soon as you get to the post office, have them weigh your potato and get your postage label

    • Mine Cost $4.14
  • Super glue postage label first since this will take up the most space

    • My Post Office said they prefer on the top of the potato but be careful not too high that it is on the bend.  Where the potato starts to curve it is hard to make the label stick
    • Be sure that all corners of the labels have super glue, this is the most important part to make stick
    • After I put the super glue on, I would hold down the corners with the eraser of a pencil so I could hold the very corner edge without getting glue on me.  Once I felt like it was starting to set, I would hold it with a paper towel until I felt like it was dry enough.  This probably took me 15-20 minutes for all 3 labels.
  • Make sure you place labels like you would on an envelope with return address in the upper hand corner
  • After they were all dry, I used my permanent marker to write: To and From:

Step 4: Personalize and Decorate

  • – Use your permanent marker to write a message
  • – Use your markers to decorate

Step 5: Make friends at Your Local Post Office

Mailing weird stuff to surprise your friends & family can be fun.  It also can be a pain if you don't know what you are doing.  The key is to make friends with your local post office.  It's surprising the things they have seen and experience they have on mailing anything!  I always go in and ask first on how to do it.  I find this to be the easiest way, but it definitely helps they know me.  Here's a quick list of fun things to mail on their own with no packaging:

  • Coconut
  • Flip-flop
  • Sombrero
  • Lime
  • Rock
  • Brick (Remember you are paying for weight, but it would be funny!)
  • Inflated Beach Ball
  • Pinata
  • Frisbee
  • Bucket
  • Pillow (My best friend recently moved to Wisconsin, I think she is getting a pillow!)
  • Orange
  • Plastic Toys
  • And the list goes on and on

With so many military bases nearby like Quantico and Fort Belvoir, I thought there would be a lot of people who may have recently moved and wanted to find a silly way to stay in touch with friends and family.  I hope this helps!

Potato Cost 62 cents at Super Wal-Mart & $4.14 to ship = $4.76

I mailed on November 5 and My Sister Received November 10, Arrived in 5 Days

Other than picking up a potato and the grocery story, washing it, I spent a little over an hour preparing and decorating my potato at the post office.

Mail A Potato Yourself

Pros

  • Only Cost $4.76
  • Arrives in 5 days (based on my experience)
  • I got to decorate and personalize it myself

Cons

  • Took approximately 1 1/2 hour of my time

Anonymous Potato

Pros

  • Took approximately 5 minutes of my time, (maybe less if I didn't have to confirm his address with his best friend, Mike)

Cons

  • Cost $15 to ship
  • Takes 12 days to arrive
  • Message arrive very plan, written in black sharpie, nothing more

Daylight Saving Time 2015, Woodbridge VA

Daylight Saving Time 2015 Ends on November 1

That's This Sunday!

It's that time of year again.  Time to "Fall Back" thanks to the END TO Daylight Saving Time.  This year we turn our clocks back the day after Halloween.  Luckily with today's technology, all our clocks, phones and cable boxes automatically update themselves.

5 Facts About Daylight Saving Time

  1. Daylight Saving Time Occurs the 2nd Sunday in March & The 1st Sunday in November
  2. Germany was the First Country To Adopt The Daylight Saving Policy in 1916
  3. It's Daylight Saving Time NOT Daylight Savings Time

    1. by saying "saving" you are referring to it as an adjective
  4. Not Everyone Springs Forward and Falls Back

    1. Only About 25% of the World takes part in Daylight Saving Time, aka DST
    2. Areas closer to the Equator have less of a need to change their clocks
    3. In the United States, Hawaii and parts of Arizona do not participate in Daylight Light Saving Time
  5. When Daylight Saving Time ends in the Fall, My body thinks I should start getting ready for bed at 7 p.m.

National Fire Protection Association, Daylight Saving Time Article
National Fire Protection Association, Daylight Saving Time Article

National Fire Protection Association encourages everyone to use Daylight Saving Time, aka DST,  to mark the time of year you check on your Smoke Detectors. This would be a good routine to make sure batteries in your smoke detectors are replaced and all your smoke detectors are in working order.

The article specifically states to check on smoke detectors as DST begins.  I suspect is because the article was written in March. For me and my household, we use both Spring Forward and Fall Back to make sure our family is properly protected.

8 Inexpensive Ways to Increase Your Homeā€™s Value

8 Inexpensive Ways to Increase Your Homeā€™s Value

1. Cleaning and decluttering ($290 cost / $1,990 price increase / 586% ROI)
2. Landscaping ($540 cost / $1,932 price increase / 258% ROI)
3. Repairing electrical or plumbing ($535 cost / $1,505 price increase / 181% ROI)
4. Kitchen and bathroom upgrades ($1,265 cost / $3,435 price increase / 172% ROI)
5. Replace or shampoo carpets ($647 cost / $1,730 price increase / 169% ROI)
6. Paint interior ($1,012 cost / $2,112 price increase / 109% ROI)
7. Repair floors ($931 cost / $1,924 price increase /107% ROI)
8. Paint exterior ($1,467 cost / $2,222 price increase / 51% ROI)

Full disclosure, I received the above list from another Real Estate agent. I don’t know where she got the numbers from but they all look about right to me.

1. Cleaning and decluttering really doesn’t have to cost you anything, unless you are hiring a cleaning team and getting additional storage. If you are decluttering and cleaning this can be a zero cost item and it will have the biggest impact and will give you the highest return.

2. Same if landscaping, if you have somewhat of a green thumb then go to Lowes or home depot and buy some nice flower pots, mulch and anything else that can give your home curb appeal.

3. Repairing electrical or plumbing for this you will most likely hire a professional, but you can replace and making sure all light bulbs are working.

4. Small kitchen and bathroom upgrades will go a long way. You can upgrade flooring very easily, paint will go a long way too.

5. Clean carpets, this will go a long way.

6. Paint will make your home look great. Neutral paint this is. Paint yourself or hire a professional but this doesn’t have to break the bank either.

7. Repair Floors, I have an excellent flooring guy that you should contact.

8. Paint the exterior, especially your front door, again this doesn’t have to break the bank and will have a great impact.

What would you do if you had the winning Powerball ticket?

What would you do if you had the winning Powerball ticket? by Claudia S. Nelson with Keller Williams Realty in Woodbridge VA CALL 571-446-0002

Let me say this first I am one of these people that only plays the lottery when there is a large jackpot and each time I play I dream what I would be doing with the money if I win. I am realistic knowing that the chances are slimmer then slim for me to actually win, however it is fun to think about it and imagine.

What would you do if you win the lottery?

What would you do if you had the winning ticket?

There is so much that one can do. Travel, Paying off all bills, Giving back and much more.

My take on it is I would want to invest the money into Real Estate that actually generates money for me and of course the giving back, traveling, paying off bills and all that good stuff. But I wouldn’t want to go crazy. I am not interested in buying expensive cars or an island, I am more realistic. I want to make sure me and my family are set for the rest of our lives.

Yesterday someone asked me if I would win the lottery if I would quite my job? Personally I don’t think I would quite my job. Not working would be so boring. I love what I am doing and I love helping people achieve their real estate dreams, so no I would not want to quite my job. I would want to open my own brokerage and hire the right people so that I can take more vacations, see my family more but otherwise I would still like to work.

What about you? Would you quite working?

Also would you take the one time payout or get the funds over a certain amount of time?

Well considering yesterdays winning tickets were sold in Puerto Rico, Texas and North Carolina there is no chance that I am a lottery winner this morning, but it was fun thinking about it.

I will stick with working hard, accomplishing my dreams and not count or expect on winning the lottery one day.

If you are looking to win the lottery, rather then playing lottery you should use your money and investing it in Real Estate. Real Estate has been an excellent investment for most people over time.

You can make money by investing in Real Estate. If you are still renting you have not yet bought your first lottery ticket. Get that very first ticket and then consider investing in Real Estate.
