Bull Run Festival Lights in Centreville, Virginia

7700 Bull Run Drive, Centreville, VA    Christmas Lights 18 miles from Woodbridge, VA
$15 a car Sunday-Thursday, $20 a car Friday-Saturday and Holidays.  This drive through light show 2.5 miles long with 40,000 animated lights set to music.  Located in Bull Run Regional Park, the Christmas Light display ends at a Holiday Village that also has an ice skating rink, carnival rides and food even the traditional hot chocolate.

Parade of Lighted Boats in Alexandria, Virginia

December 5, 2015 at 6 p.m.  This is a one night event.  It is FREE!  There is something magical about seeing thousands of lights reflecting off the Potomac River.  This Saturday, December 5 watch dozens of festive boats at the Parade of Lighted Boats in Alexandria.

ICE! at Gaylord National Harbor in National Harbor, Maryland

Tickets are $14-$34 available now until January 3, 2016.  This huge indoor ICE! wonderland is so popular people come from all over to see.  It is located at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor just over the bridge.  This walk through holiday attraction has over 2 million pounds of hand carved ICE! sculptures.  There are 7 rooms that re-tell the classic story "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town". There is fun for the whole family including ice slides and a live ice carving zone.  Not really Christmas Lights near me but family fun to that will get everyone in the holiday spirit.

Christmas Pageant of Peace of the Ellipse in Washington, DC

Since 1923, the United States has had a National Christmas Tree in Washington DC.  It is now surrounded by 56 smaller decorated trees knows as the "Pathway of Peace".  This year's national tree lighting will take place on December 3 at 4:30 p.m. and will be available for viewing until January 1.

This year I have partnered with Brothers in Christ Ministries and L & B's Pizzeria of Dale City to help them with their Annual SANTA TOY RUN.  This yearly charity event is a TOY DRIVE for local kids who would otherwise go without a Christmas.  Over the last 5 years, Brothers in Christ Ministries and L & B's Pizzeria have found a way to perfect this into an afternoon of live bands, raffles and a real kick off to The Reason For The Season.

Last year, Brothers in Christ Ministries and L & B's Pizzeria's Toy Drive, gave a Christmas to 37 families for a total of 110 CHILDREN!  With the money they raised from the 2014 Santa Toy Run they purchased 17 bicycles, shoes, pants and shirts for each child plus with all the toys donated they were able to give 4-5 presents to each child.

It's that time of year again.  Time to "Fall Back" thanks to the END TO Daylight Saving Time.  This year we turn our clocks back the day after Halloween.  Luckily with today's technology, all our clocks, phones and cable boxes automatically update themselves.  

 
5 Facts About Daylight Saving Time

 

  1. Daylight Saving Time Occurs the 2nd Sunday in March & The 1st Sunday in November
  2. Germany was the First Country To Adopt The Daylight Saving Policy in 1916
  3. It's Daylight Saving Time NOT Daylight Savings Time

    1. by saying "saving" you are referring to it as an adjective
  4. Not Everyone Springs Forward and Falls Back

    1. Only About 25% of the World takes part in Daylight Saving Time, aka DST
    2. Areas closer to the Equator have less of a need to change their clocks
    3. In the United States, Hawaii and parts of Arizona do not participate in Daylight Light Saving Time
  5. When Daylight Saving Time ends in the Fall, My body thinks I should start getting ready for bed at 7 p.m.

National Fire Protection Association encourages everyone to use Daylight Saving Time, aka DST,  to mark the time of year you check on your Smoke Detectors. This would be a good routine to make sure batteries in your smoke detectors are replaced and all your smoke detectors are in working order. 
 
The article specifically states to check on smoke detectors as DST begins.  I suspect is because the article was written in March. For me and my household, we use both Spring Forward and Fall Back to make sure our family is properly protected.

Memorial Day Weekend and Rolling Thunder For Northern Virginia

This weekend marks an important Federal Holiday where we pause to honor and remember all the men and women who have died in military services for the United States.  Living in Northern Virginia, so close to District of Columbia, we are fortunate to have so many events planned this weekend in helping us pay tribute to our great military.  One of the biggest events being held is weekend is Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder's main event will take place this Sunday when  thousands of motorcycles will "Roll" into D.C for a ride from the Pentagon to The Vietnam Memorial Wall.  Have you ever heard the sound of thousands of motorcycles?  Thunder really is the best word to describe it.

Rolling Thunder is a non-profit organization founded in 1987 to bring full accountability for the Prisoner's of War and Missing in Action of all United States Wars.  Their motto is, "We Will Never Forget." Each year since 1988, they organize an annual motorcycle run the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend for a ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, also known as the Freedom Run.  Motorcycle participants leave the Pentagon parking lot at Noon in a parade setting making their way to the Wall.  Each year Motorcycle's and riders are decorated with American flags, patriotic attire and POW flags as they head to the Wall with streets lined with spectators dressed in Red, White and blue waving flags at the participants.   This event is really beautiful as it captures the love for our military and reminds that patriotism is still alive and well.

The parade officially starts at Noon on Sunday, May 24 but it is highly recommended you get there early.  Many people start showing up to find their spot along the parade route as early at 9 a.m.  During this event their are many road closures in downtown D.C. and parking is scarce.  Taking the Metro into D.C. is definitely your best choice.  You can find more about the parade route, Thunder Alley shopping & all this weekend events organized by Rolling Thunder Run at or on Rolling Thunder's official website.
